Juxtapoz Detroit project

At the end of October, Juxtapoz Magazine sent a couple artists to Detroit, MI to work with Powerhouse to fix up the neighborhoods, creating a new community in a city with one of the highest poverty percentages and violent crime rates. It was my first time in Detroit and I loved it and it exceeded my expectations. It's a dying, collapsing city that's like a ghost town in many ways, but for an artist or any creative person, there's also this wonderful sense of expansive opportunity that I haven't felt in any other US city. In that sense, it is very much alive and I'm glad to have given Detroit what we made there in two weeks and left behind. In return, we gained new friendships and inspiration and brought that back with us to share. A neighbor told Mitch from Powerhouse that he was thinking about abandoning his house, but after seeing new life in the neighborhood, decided to stay. If that doesn't speak for the impact of art and how just even one individual being touched, deeply matters, I'm not sure what else can.

The house I picked was previously worked on by a group of various architects. I layered upon some of their work like a sculptural collage. Their work was more structured and minimal and I hoped to create a nice contrast and a warmer environment by making a miniature neighborhood within a neighborhood with lots of recycled scrap materials. The hanging white cut out that casts a shadow above the houses was part of a much larger piece that was covering the bottom of a stairway. I was going to rip the whole thing off, but then decided to leave it hanging and carve out a drawing from it. There's a theme of a flood through the installation; fabric flows out from the house like water and the houses sit on waves, thus the name of the piece is 'The Flood House.' Ironically in the middle of making my installation, I found out that the house leaks and I had a couple nights of scrambling for buckets, laying towels around and covering things with plastic tarps. There are long term plans to make the outside of this house as part of a neighborhood skate park. For now, I wanted 'The Flood House' to be like a time capsule library. People are invited to send mail to this house, giving it some new life and connection to others. What would you have done to fix up this house? Your letters most likely won't be responded to or opened immediately, thus the time capsule element.

flood of tears

drip drip...

seahorses with open arms. their hair is made from scraps of paper salvaged from a place that we broke into one night as we were driving and the road just ended without warning and left us at a dead end in front of a boarded up apartment building. i think they are accounting documents from 1973.

oversized fake pencils made with paint and giant nails. i don't know who would need a really giant nail. looked like a stake for pitching tents or stabbing someone or something.

homage to the black squirrels i saw in detroit. i thought squirrels were only brown.

downstairs closet. i made a string 'spider web' with paper leaves.

upstairs window. paper cut out and wheat paste.

last morning quick shot before heading to the airport. horrible. exhausted. cold. only 2 hours of sleep. only pic i have of the outside of house.

a mystery person stapled this to the outside of my house and where ben wolf's installation starts. i thought it was monica and harrison, but ben told me he thinks he saw a man that looked like santa claus doing it... i wonder!

i found this on the front porch of the house i was staying at, the morning i was leaving. mystery! who did this and how did they know i love it? it was such a beautiful, magical surprise. :) i shoved them into my carry on bag and now they're on my studio shelf....

Garfields Hundreds art show

Garfield was the first comic I ever read and loved. Here's the flyer for the show and my piece. I made my own kind of existential comic jokes and drew Garfield from memory. That's why he's quirky and odd looking. The paper is from old books found in Portland, OR and I started drawing while waiting at the airport.

oaxaca trip

so, part of being the worst blogger means that i can't edit. enjoy the world's longest blog post with 58 images from oaxaca. my friend caroline hwang and i went down to oaxaca, mexico a few weeks ago to work on some etchings. images of the finished print will be posted later with more info. we hung out with the guys from arte cocodrilo, uriel, daniel puche and daniel berman, just ate every kind of oaxacan food, worked on our prints and watched mexico play in the world cup. highlights of the trip were going to the weaving village and learning to make mole sauce, horchata and more yumminess at cooking lessons with the nicest australian people, travis and karin at de la tierra. i love oaxaca....... !!!!!

Scion presents: Ed Emberley & Friends

July 17 - August 7, 2010

Ed Emberley's legendary drawing books inspired a generation of kids to become artists. In this show, Ed Emberley displays his original 1970's mockups alongside five grown-up artists who were influenced by him.

Curated by Caleb Neelon, the exhibition features Ed Emberley as well as five artists who were inspired by him. The artists include Raul Gonzalez, Seonna Hong, Matt Leines, Christopher Kline and Saelee Oh.

For "Ed Emberley & Friends," each artist will create a six-foot-by-six-foot wood panel that is a mash-up of their own style and that of Ed Emberley's instructional drawing books. The tribute paintings will be exhibited alongside examples of each artist's individual work. After the show, each of the large painted panels will be donated for long-term display in children's hospitals around the United States.

hi folks! so i think i definitely win the award of the year for world's worst blogger. what has been going on since the beginning of this year and winter's end?!!?? well..... too much it seems. time just whizzes by faster and faster it seems. and that's why i haven't blogged about it.

i love all animals, cute ones and ugly ones (except for opossum), wild ones and domesticated ones, furry ones and scaly ones. if i had to pick my favorite though, it'd be a whale which represents a gentle, mysterious giant. i draw them all the time, but a few days ago was the first time i got to see them in real life!!! it's humpback whale breeding season in baja, mexico. fortunately for me, we saw about 15-20 and lots of dolphins too. unfortunately for you, i could win an award for world's worst whale photographer.

aquarium animation project

eric nakamura and i worked on a stop motion animation project! he already blogged about it here and here so of course my blog is behind, but i wanted to post pics anyways.

it was over 3 long nights of back breaking, foot numbing, laborious work for one minute of lo-fi janky goodness. 6 frames = one second. sometimes it would take us a couple minutes just to shoot one frame. time goes by fast unless you're trying to make bits of paper move and come to life. we'll post the final animation later. eric has super hero powers and is good at noticing details and doing things meticulously and not settling for laziness so he was a good partner. it was fun.

here's eric's cousin, goh nakamura, who put the icing on the cake. somehow he whips up a custom soundtrack to our animation in practically no time and now the animation has a mood, a feeling and some heart and life to it. goh is like god.

yum. we ate at gochi. i survived eating beef tongue for the first time. it was really tasty although i did have the thought of french kissing a cow when i first put it in my mouth. the ambiance is cozy and made me nostalgic for japan because they have the rooms with sliding paper covered doors and the seats where it looks like you're sitting low to the ground, but there's a secret empty space sunken into the floor right under the table for you to hang your legs. everyone takes their shoes off before sitting down to eat. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you're probably really confused... i'll just also say that their black sesame ice cream is AMAZING. i'd french kiss that all day, everyday.

bazaar bizarre in san francisco

this past weekend was the bazaar bizarre craft fair in SF. It was a nice excuse to get out of the house and drive up north to get some fresh, rainy air. i had some custom fabric printed and made some pouches and brooches. they sold out during the show but we'll have more for renegade this upcoming weekend. i can't go out to that one, so say hello to my sister and doppelganger, saewon oh.

but, i already knew that. i recently went to see my friend gregory han of apartment therapy give a panel talk about blogging. it was hosted by blog out loud. I was just down the street eating thai food when I got the facebook update that he'd be talking one block over at DWR so it was totally meant to be. I got to test out my dream office chair for a couple hours to make sure that I like it (i do. i rolled around the whole store in it like it's my wheelchair) and listened to bloggers talk about blogging. it made me miss school. I learned that I do most things wrong. I don't open up my posts to comments, I don't blog regularly, and I blog late. like for example, this event was about 2 weeks ago and my last post of hawaii was a month ago and i'm behind on blogging photos of italy from 2 months ago. that's ancient history in blog world. oh well. it was inspiring and fun and for now i'm gonna keep doing things my own retarded way.

other news lately....

house/cat sitting again for the month. this place has a koi pond and lots of gorgeous wood and large glass windows with views of a tree in the courtyard. it's peaceful, i'm getting lots of work done and there's a house cleaner. i think these past 2 years i've slept in close to 100 different beds.

yay. bazaar bizarre, art and my fish

Jenny from CutxPaste and I just found out that we got selected to show at Bazaar Bizarre in SF on Dec. 12th - 13th. Time to get crafty!... I'm looking forward to making all the fun, little stuff that i've been wanting to for a while...I always like setting up shop like a lemonade stand. last year, i was distracted because of something and couldn't enjoy anything. this year will be fun. Hope to see you there...

Meanwhile, here's a sneak peak on what i've been working on these past few days...it's the opposite of little, but still fun for me, despite the blister i got.

I know. not the greatest photo... but it's coming along.... it's about 40 inches by 45 inches. one piece of paper. cut with an exacto blade. i've been really into the shapes of roots lately and plant life. half of my library books are about plants. the other half? tao te ching, books on hawaii, handwriting analysis, carl jung and i just finished bel canto. bringing the topic back to roots though, is there anything cooler than the mandrake? not really. and did you know that wild bananas have lots of seeds? yellow store bananas that are the cartoon food for cartoon gorillas are seedless because of humans. i wish i had a banana right now. Mmm.

here's jeffrey the fish. i was heartbroken and anti-pets after morrison passed away... but, my mom bought jeffrey from the store and i stole him. he's smart. he recognizes me i think. or at least he knows that when my big, blobby shape comes to him, he'll get food and he wiggles his body around and looks at me. he didn't know that at first. he was disoriented from the journey. poor guy. one of my horoscopes once said that i confuse pity and love. i think it's sadly true. anyways, jeffrey the fish crunches his food loudly. it's cute. i have to get him a nicer bowl and some more plants. oh jeffrey. my love for you is bigger than your tiny eyes and your tiny brains and tiny scales. i wish i knew you when you were a baby. and I wish I could know when you're full and i hope i'm not making you fat. maybe i could teach you english or measure your poop.

i also wish snakes could be vegetarian.

here's an article that was in some magazine insert of a korean newspaper. this came out a few weeks ago? i didn't know about it until my mom's friend found it. i didn't read it because it would take me a whole day to sound out each letter so, it could be a scathing review for all i know... my mom tells me that it's not though. anyways... thank you koreans. i hope to visit you next summer and teach during the day and stay up and party and eat dukbokki all night.

So, Jill Bliss and I just completed our 5th collaborative annual calendar. Yay. It's waiting to go to the printers. I'll post layouts of the actual pages soon. This is a behind the scenes look at how the cover image was created. Pretty simple, hand made, d.i.y. Can't believe we're on our 5th one already... Each year we try out something a little different with the process. This year's 'Flock and Flutter' art is all shot in real life nature settings with our paper artwork characters. it's amaaaazing!!!

i stopped by the opening really quickly on Sat. night... so amazing. the Clayton Brothers were teachers of mine and a huge influence and inspiration over the years. they're good guys. extremely dedicated and hardworking and full of heart but they also have a laid back vibe that's calming to be around. i've loved watching their work evolve over the years. go see their show if you can...

here's the little guy that i used to make my mr. horse print.

he could use a bit of sun and get a tan. he's pale.
in the print, he was cold. that's why he's blue. i should have given him a sweater made out of a layer of ink.
but, don't worry. i think he's ok. he likes snowmen and seeing his breath in the crispy, chilly air.

me and a heavy python in front of tanah lot! my heart was beating fast and i'm trying not to look scared! crazy how her whole body is just pure muscle and i could feel her passing over my neck like a heavy wave. she was raised by the young balinese boy on the left since she was the size of a pencil. he feeds her 10 chickens a month. the world's longest python in captivity (49 feet) eats dogs and happens to be in another part of indonesia.

tanah lot temple during low tide. during high tide, it's completely surrounded by water and harder to invade because you can't walk up to it. my sister had a photo of this place by her bedside from an old book and i've wanted to go there because it looked so magical. the book didn't say where it was though so i was extra surprised and happy to have found it. we didn't get to go up to the temple but walking around on the wet dirt and rocks was like being on another planet. there's beautiful pools of water and the dirt is striped and shaped so oddly because of the seawater.

my first time eating durian (the spiky yellow fruit). it wasn't as stinky as i thought it'd be but it's really rich and creamy and i couldn't eat more than a few bites... not sure if i like it... i like mangosteen better (the round deep purpley red fruit) which is really hard to find here in the states. the number of petals on the flower like shape on the bottom of a mangosteen fruit tells you how many segments of the lychee like fruit is inside.

wild monkeys off the side of the road! there were a LOT. and they're mean. cute but, mean. we fed them fruit.

traditional balinese offerings that you see everywhere and every mother teaches their children how to make... it's all made from young coconut leaves and tiny bamboo pieces to hold it together. all you need is a knife. look at the woven ones. sometimes they put raw rice in them and steam it. i spent over an hour with a balinese woman trying to learn how to make one and my hands were too clumsy. she also tried to teach me how to make a woven one that looks like a bird and some other ones... i brought them all home and now they're all brown, dried up and moldy but i love them.

we rode elephants at the elephant safari park!! i LOVE elephants!!! these are rescued sumatran elephants and now i'm biased but i think sumatrans are the cutest. i even didn't mind the high-contrast dots on their noses which i usually have a fear of (they gross me out). elephants are one of the most amazing, sensitive, intelligent animals... there's an amazing elephant orphanage in kenya. read this heartbreaking story.

our elephant was hungry and she kept holding the line up by stopping to eat. she even pulled up a whole tree while trying to grab a branch. ha.

the best part was getting to pet a sleeping baby elephant!! they had 2 at the park. one was 5 days old. one was 3 weeks old. boy and a girl. they're SO CUTE!!! they're not soft though. looks like soft downy hair, but it's kind of thick and rough... their toenails are soooo cute and perfect! watching them play and headbutt the caretakers and climb all over them was funny. im sure that can't last for a while. i want a baby elephant!!!

wish i there still! right now i'm looking out at the cloudy weather and looking at my never ending to-do list... oh well. back to work! :)

oh yeah, i forgot to share other things. other highlights: visiting the balinese healer man, giant bed in one our hotels the size of 2 king size beds, white water rafting which was more like brown water floating, balinese shadow puppet show (it was about 45 mins. too long but, def. one of my fave things. i brought home some puppets too... one is a naked chubby man holding a knife and the other is a black bull with a flower in its ear), interesting vegetation everywhere including something called an elephant ear leaf that i used as an umbrella for the mist when we hiked to a waterfall , rice paddies, cooking lesson where we made soup, chicken satay, fish wrapped in banana leaves, green crepe like thing w/ coconut for dessert and handmade peanut sauce using a stone mortar and pestle and getting cheap massages... i don't know why we didn't get more.... balinese people are good people. i like them.

signs of spring i've witnessed recently:
-hummingbird nest outside our window. we saw the eggs and then the 2 little naked babies and now i see a hummingbird in the backyard regularly that i like to assume was from the nest.
-had to brake fast to avoid hitting a mama duck and her baby ducklings crossing the freeway onramp. they were sooo cute. it was like a cartoon moment.
-my tan lines are back.
-all i want to do is spring clean. i got rid of a bunch of stuff and i'm trying to get rid of more. go here to take my stuff.

me with paintbrush in my mouth looking at the pony's behind. he's wearing socks by the way. those are not boots. i'm going to add more clothes on him later.

this was done in 2 nights. click on image for a bigger view. i have to take a break from working on it until next month when i get back from NY, SF and bali. my dad has had this coin laundry for over 20 years and he'll drive an hour every day, both ways, to make sure it's running smoothly. there were a lot of nights when an emergency would come up and he'd have to go back out to the coin laundry to take care of business in the middle of the night. i asked my dad what he thought of it and he said 'i don't know if the customers will get it. it looks like something in a bookstore. we'll have to see if the machines closer to the mural make more money. then that means the customers like it. if they don't that means they want to get away from it.' ha. the next night he seemed pleased cause he got positive reactions but he's my dad and he's the best and i think he would have liked anything i painted even if it was a piece of poop on the wall.

come on by if you need to do a load of laundry. lights. darks, big loads for big blankets.... everything!

i've been set up with someone I've never met before to collaborate on an upcoming show at Giant Robot in San Francisco. Artists and game makers will be working together to make games that people can play!

miracles happen. i've been stuck on euro time and have been going bed at a normal time like a normal human and not a vampire. jill bliss has been staying with me and we've been busy working on our show... this is the first time in our 4 years of collaborating that i've been on the same sleep schedule as her.

i'm too lazy to clean right now and too lazy to take a better photo so here's a pic in reverse for dyslexic people because it was taken with 'photo booth.'

it's nice having someone in the studio out here in the 'burbs.
we're going to try to finish work early so that i can take jill to see my psychic lady while she's in town. i'm not ready yet to get a reading for myself again 'cause the last one she gave me started to creep me out... but, i'd like to drop by to say hello and to tell her that she was right. maybe psychics don't hear about follow ups often enough.

other things i learned today:
- horoscopes are TRUE. why?!!!! how??!!! it makes no sense.
- a guy i went to high school with is the world's 6th best poker player. crazy.
- our dog has an eating disorder. over the weekend i pet-sat for another dog with a different sort of eating disorder. i wish i could help them.
- some people are mean and i want to hit them in the face with a rock... through the phone.

looks crappy in this photo but looks great up close because you can see all the detail and texture of the dioramas that jill bliss and i made for our 2009 calendar. these will be part of an upcoming art show at tinlark, nov. 15th. everything else in the show will be new pieces that weren't a part of our calendar but expands on the theme of 'gathered together.'

haarlem is the town next to amsterdam and i took a little mini trip there to meet up with marlies, a book designer that i've worked with on several occasions. she showed me the proof of the last project i worked on with her. it might all get revised but i liked the version that i saw.

i skipped a lot of the middle part and i don't even know if i have this order correct but this is an amazing book. more detailed than a where's waldo book and simply about a girl cleaning her her room. it's sequential and about 30 pages i think. i love obsessive details.

amsterdam!! i think i'm partly biased because amsterdam was warmer than denmark, but i love this city. it's my second time visiting and i want to live on a houseboat or squat here...

fave parts of trip: riding bikes and getting lost, walking tour with our hosts joordi and anne, swans and yellow leaves in the canals, seeing the clash of new artist/designer studios juxtaposed in between prostitutes in the red light district, chocolate boutique, tons of bookshops everywhere, best thai food ever at thai bird, blurriness and giggles, pumpkin head men and panda boats... conclusion: i never wanted to leave but, it's probably a good thing that i did. p.s. on the plane ride back to the u.s. a man tried to choke another passenger and had to be restrained. then when we landed, we all had to wait a little bit longer for the police to come. weird.

i don't know what sort of supplement they mean...

we had smørrebrød, which is an open faced sandwich at Ida Davidson's. One of the best sandwiches i've had, i'm gonna get this half wrong prob., buti cant there was salty salami, creamy horseradish and cream cheese, a confetti of radishes and chives and a sweet berry sauce. so good.

someone's bike that drowned in the water. i wonder what happened.

i forget the name of this dessert. it's something like 'ball bread' or 'roll cake' or something, but it's a ball made out of day old croissants and other desserts all mashed together. caroline wanted to try it and the people behind the counter highly recommended it as a traditional danish thing. i don't know if i'm losing my sweet tooth or if i'm grossed out by the idea of a ball of leftovers, but it wasn't very good.

fresh mint tea served from a bike with home grown herbs and hot water from a thermos.

overall impressions of copenhagen: clean, cloudy, bit chilly, very content, easy to get around. a bit reserved but extremely nice and polite people. positive and satisfied but not complacent. tall. very tall. blonde. way better social and government programs than the U.S. felt weird not to leave a 20% tip at restaurants and bars. home of hans christian anderson.

other fave highlights: homemade fluffy cheesecake with limoncello at our hosts's house, sweater hugs, fresh apples from an apple tree and no love for mccain and bush. conclusion: caroline and i wouldn't mind at all if we found danish husbands.

my friend caroline hwang had a show in copenhagen, denmark and i hopped on a plane to tag along with her. it's a beautiful show and i'm very proud of her. her new work is centered around nautical flags and uses both their signaling messages and caroline's imagery to tell a story to the viewer. here's a few pics but there should be more on her blog. the girl she showed with is named Gudrun Hasle and I'm a new appreciator of her work because she has a good sense of humor and her work explores both broader themes like commentaries on the art world and personal, private themes like documenting the little seemingly ordinary moments of life. more info on the show at beaver project's website.

chris johanson at deitch gallery. first you walk through this dome like structure to see the works inside and then you walk outside of it to see other installations and the outside of the structure. all made out of scrap wood. gorgeous.

now that i have a blog, i can share this mural that i did with Maxwell Loren-Holyoke when I was in San Francisco about a month ago.

my memory's not so fresh anymore but i remember snacking on beer and beef jerky while we waited for the paint to dry. . . talking to a homeless guy who knew the secret to amazing spaghetti sauce and another homeless guy named patches who had over 400 patches sewn onto his jacket and pants. . . maxwell was able to take like, 3 pee breaks and i had to hold mine in for hours 'cause he's a guy and i'm a girl. we painted till it was dark and my fingers were cold. good times. . .

so, i wrote earlier how olive, the family pug, left to go stay with my sister.
update: she had to come back because saejean found out that she lives with some bloods (gangsters). they're buddies with the manager which means that they're not leaving and olive, who likes to sport a blue bandana with cherries, had to be booted out.

my other sister, age 16, has been secretly hoarding a hamster in her room. meet hamlet graham. i helped her get him since my mom disapproved. the first hamster she considered adopting had BIG BALLS.

this one has a pair that isn't as noticeable. we're hoping that they don't grow huge later. seriously, the first one's balls were about the size of it's head and they dragged all up and down my sister's arm while she held him. the pet shop lady recommended him as her favorite though because he was the friendliest. correlation? we will never know. hamsters don't know english. otherwise this one, small balls, would understand our shouts after it poops all over us.

those houses were part of a make-your-own 3d neighborhood silkscreen print that jill bliss and i made last year. we didn't think about how to make them sing. saewon just moved up north to the bay area into a tiny bedroom and i'm surprised that those things made it through the purge cut. i guess i'm flattered. her bedroom is pretty much about the size of those paper houses. she's living in a home for miniature elves.

highlights of today:
- boxing boot camp class. i'm training to kill.
- french lesson with my french tutor currently living in south korea. we talk via skype. i love modern technology. now if only someone can invent a language chip that i can just insert into my brain instantly. . . it'd be so much faster.
- my littlest sis and i painted our nails together and hatched up secret plans.
- got this in my email inbox! ! ! wow. i'm a professional now! ha. it looks fake to me and reminds me of other illusions (see pic below). seriously and sincerely though, giant robot has been supporting me pretty much since day 1, and i owe them a lot. they're like family. i'm like the retarded little sister and as my big bros, GR has been nurturing and supportive and i feel both totally comfortable yet still always feel like im learning and am reminded to remember to always keep it fun.

some scenes on the way to my weekly ceramics class that i'm taking with my dad and my little sis. my "thing" (it WAS meant to be a vase... but it sort of spread out and turned into a bowl...i think??) is in it's ugly duckling phase right now so i'll spare your eyes. i love getting my hands messy with clay though. i love the smell. i love making something out of nothing.
