below average whale photographer

i love all animals, cute ones and ugly ones (except for opossum), wild ones and domesticated ones, furry ones and scaly ones. if i had to pick my favorite though, it'd be a whale which represents a gentle, mysterious giant. i draw them all the time, but a few days ago was the first time i got to see them in real life!!! it's humpback whale breeding season in baja, mexico. fortunately for me, we saw about 15-20 and lots of dolphins too. unfortunately for you, i could win an award for world's worst whale photographer.

so cute!. im so proud of my little green guys. they're going to be pine trees. see how the tips are already splitting into thing needles? they're like the wire frame of an umbrella right now.

aquarium animation project

eric nakamura and i worked on a stop motion animation project! he already blogged about it here and here so of course my blog is behind, but i wanted to post pics anyways.


it was over 3 long nights of back breaking, foot numbing, laborious work for one minute of lo-fi janky goodness. 6 frames = one second. sometimes it would take us a couple minutes just to shoot one frame. time goes by fast unless you're trying to make bits of paper move and come to life. we'll post the final animation later. eric has super hero powers and is good at noticing details and doing things meticulously and not settling for laziness so he was a good partner. it was fun.

here's eric's cousin, goh nakamura, who put the icing on the cake. somehow he whips up a custom soundtrack to our animation in practically no time and now the animation has a mood, a feeling and some heart and life to it. goh is like god.


yum. we ate at gochi. i survived eating beef tongue for the first time. it was really tasty although i did have the thought of french kissing a cow when i first put it in my mouth. the ambiance is cozy and made me nostalgic for japan because they have the rooms with sliding paper covered doors and the seats where it looks like you're sitting low to the ground, but there's a secret empty space sunken into the floor right under the table for you to hang your legs. everyone takes their shoes off before sitting down to eat. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you're probably really confused... i'll just also say that their black sesame ice cream is AMAZING. i'd french kiss that all day, everyday.

bazaar bizarre in san francisco

this past weekend was the bazaar bizarre craft fair in SF. It was a nice excuse to get out of the house and drive up north to get some fresh, rainy air. i had some custom fabric printed and made some pouches and brooches. they sold out during the show but we'll have more for renegade this upcoming weekend. i can't go out to that one, so say hello to my sister and doppelganger, saewon oh.

i learned that i'm not a great blogger

but, i already knew that. i recently went to see my friend gregory han of apartment therapy give a panel talk about blogging. it was hosted by blog out loud. I was just down the street eating thai food when I got the facebook update that he'd be talking one block over at DWR so it was totally meant to be. I got to test out my dream office chair for a couple hours to make sure that I like it (i do. i rolled around the whole store in it like it's my wheelchair) and listened to bloggers talk about blogging. it made me miss school. I learned that I do most things wrong. I don't open up my posts to comments, I don't blog regularly, and I blog late. like for example, this event was about 2 weeks ago and my last post of hawaii was a month ago and i'm behind on blogging photos of italy from 2 months ago. that's ancient history in blog world. oh well. it was inspiring and fun and for now i'm gonna keep doing things my own retarded way.

other news lately....

house/cat sitting again for the month. this place has a koi pond and lots of gorgeous wood and large glass windows with views of a tree in the courtyard. it's peaceful, i'm getting lots of work done and there's a house cleaner. i think these past 2 years i've slept in close to 100 different beds.

yay. bazaar bizarre, art and my fish

Jenny from CutxPaste and I just found out that we got selected to show at Bazaar Bizarre in SF on Dec. 12th - 13th. Time to get crafty!... I'm looking forward to making all the fun, little stuff that i've been wanting to for a while...I always like setting up shop like a lemonade stand. last year, i was distracted because of something and couldn't enjoy anything. this year will be fun. Hope to see you there...

Meanwhile, here's a sneak peak on what i've been working on these past few days...it's the opposite of little, but still fun for me, despite the blister i got.


I know. not the greatest photo... but it's coming along.... it's about 40 inches by 45 inches. one piece of paper. cut with an exacto blade. i've been really into the shapes of roots lately and plant life. half of my library books are about plants. the other half? tao te ching, books on hawaii, handwriting analysis, carl jung and i just finished bel canto. bringing the topic back to roots though, is there anything cooler than the mandrake? not really. and did you know that wild bananas have lots of seeds? yellow store bananas that are the cartoon food for cartoon gorillas are seedless because of humans. i wish i had a banana right now. Mmm.


here's jeffrey the fish. i was heartbroken and anti-pets after morrison passed away... but, my mom bought jeffrey from the store and i stole him. he's smart. he recognizes me i think. or at least he knows that when my big, blobby shape comes to him, he'll get food and he wiggles his body around and looks at me. he didn't know that at first. he was disoriented from the journey. poor guy. one of my horoscopes once said that i confuse pity and love. i think it's sadly true. anyways, jeffrey the fish crunches his food loudly. it's cute. i have to get him a nicer bowl and some more plants. oh jeffrey. my love for you is bigger than your tiny eyes and your tiny brains and tiny scales. i wish i knew you when you were a baby. and I wish I could know when you're full and i hope i'm not making you fat. maybe i could teach you english or measure your poop.

i also wish snakes could be vegetarian.
